Respectful Insult
Nursing is said to be a highly regarded profession that is based on principles and dignity. We are known for hierarchical respect, comportment, and overall calmness in all matters.
Recently, student
nurses have neglected the fact that hierarchy is applicable not just in the wards
but also in the school. Which poses the question of why it’s being neglected? Is
the fault coming from the school for not giving proper orientation to the newbies
or the disciplinary committee for not taking prompt action when cases are
reported? Or is the fault coming from the seniors that are allowing rapport
with their juniors to the point of addressing each other with names? Or is it
the fact that some students deem it fit to trample on existing rules and
regulations all because they are from rich and prominent homes?
Words have been flowing
down the grapevine and we have been called to attention. Apparently, juniors
have had the audacity to challenge and attack their seniors. We are still
trying to comprehend the insults. Although as far as we are concerned the fault
comes from both sides because if you don’t act in a way that would warrant
disrespect you won’t be disrespected but let’s ignore that. Whether a senior is
jovial with a junior or not, what is wrong is wrong. Whether you are from an
influential home or not, nobody cares, the fact still remains that this is an
institution in which hierarchy is the basis of our ethics.
There are so many cases
of disrespect to report but I think I’ll pick the most recent. The matter of
concern is a 2 in 1 case. I’ll let you guys fill in the name gap. The opening scene
begins at the volleyball court, now it is completely wrong to pass through
the court when a game is ongoing but I guess this junior didn’t get the memo
and she walked through. She was reprimanded by one of the playing seniors but
instead of apologizing, she flared up and insulted the senior. Trying to
diffuse the tension one of the spectators quickly put in a joke about ‘mental
101’ and everyone had a quick laugh. However, the senior wasn’t quite pleased
with the disrespect and she reported it to the authorities.
In Scene Two, The junior got to know and went
to attack the spectator thinking he reported even ‘hitting the person on the
chest’. In Scene Three, the junior went to report to the one staff in school
that seems ‘closer’ to the students, this staff went to meet the spectator to
try to find out what happened but the spectator didn’t bother denying the
claims and walked out. This staff then shifted his attention to the spectator’s
roommate on the same issue, the spectator saw this and told his roommate to
ignore the staff. This angered the staff and soon a shouting brawl broke out
because the spectator was apparently rude to the staff although if you ask me,
the fight seems personal, which makes me wonder, what’s between the staff and the
junior? Oh well.
It seems that the fact that there are now plenty students in school is causing the bridge between sets to meet. What’s your opinion, is that good or bad?
